There are a range of scholarships available to people studying in the health field. Things to note when investigating scholarships are:
  • Some are specific to people studying medicine and others are general

  • Some scholarships are only available to undergraduates or postgraduates or people who have completed part of their degree

  • Some scholarships are only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and others are more widely available

  • Some scholarships are bonded, so you may have a responsibility to work for a particular organisation or in a particular location for a set number of years and

  • Some scholarships are tax free and/or you are able to receive Abstudy/Austudy, while others may be taxed or may prohibit you from receiving government benefits or an income while in receipt of the scholarship.
Below is a list of scholarships that AIDA has been able to locate which are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people studying medicine. You should also seek advice on scholarships from your university support units. This list is not exhaustive and if you are aware of other scholarships please let AIDA know. The Ron Castan Memorial - Indigenous Peoples’ Scholarship
Eligibility Full scholarships are available for qualified candidates from developing countries.

Royal Australasian College of Physicians’ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Trainee Scholarship

Hugh Alexander Grierson Trust Bursary
Eligibility Open to applicants who identify as Australian Aboriginals, who intend to study full time at James Cook University
  Conditions The value of the bursary is for money, books, equipment or payment for residential accommodation.  
  Value $2,500  
  Closing Date 31 December of each year  
National Indigenous Cadetship Program
Eligibility Open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are studying a diploma, advanced diploma or their first undergraduate degree course.
  Conditions Refer to National Indigenous Cadetship Program site.  
  Value An allowance starting at $12,000 per annum plus $1000 per annum for books and equipment.  
  Closing Date Register any time, recruitment takes place 6 monthly.  
Minerals Council Scholarship Program
Eligibility Open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students up to 25 years old.

Pallottine Aboriginal Scholarship
Eligibility These scholarships are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  Conditions Restricted to post-secondary study; All training or study must be carried out at or through an approved educational establishment; Scholarships are awarded for a 12 month period, but may be extended for a further 12 months subject to satisfactory performance of the recipient.  
  Value Covers course fees (paid direct to the educational institution).  
  Closing Date Applications will be called for each year. They close on 30 September.  
FreightLink Scholarship
Eligibility students must be Indigenous Australians; must either be studying in the Northern Territory; or have originated from the Northern Territory and studying interstate.
  Conditions The scholarship will be made available to students entering their final years of study.

The RSL Captain Reg Saunders Scholarship
Eligibility The RSL scholarship is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander men and women who are eligible to commence a suitable degree course at a tertiary institution in Australia.
  Conditions One scholarship is offered per year. The successful applicant will plan to undertake a tertiary course of study which will either Major or specialise in the Substance Abuse area in one of the following target courses: Bachelor of Psychology; Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology major); Bachelor of Nursing; Bachelor of Social Work; Bachelor of Health Education or another course of study that can be shown by the applicant to be relevant.  
  Value $3000

Xerox Shop Mt Isa Textbook Grant
Eligibility Open to first year students of the James Cook University who attended a secondary school in Mount Isa.
  Conditions No specific conditions on use of funds.

Zinifex Century Mine
Eligibility Only Indigenous people who are part of the Gulf of Carpentaria Agreement (GCA), and interested in studying medicine or law,are encouraged to apply for a scholarship.

Indigenous Training and Recruitment Initiatives Program (INTRAIN) Scholarships
Eligibility Open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who reside in Victoria or will live in Victoria upon completion of their course, want to work for the Victorian Government and who are studying Health and allied health, Medicine, Nursing, Community development and management, Public policy and administration, Social work or Housing services (town planning, art/research, accounting, architecture); and who have not previously received an INTRAIN scholarship; Bonded to Victorian Government after studies for a set period
  Conditions Provides a living allowance paid fortnightly.  
  Value $25,470 per annum (taxable)

Australian Rotary Health Research Fund Scholarships - Indigenous Health Scholarships
Eligibility Supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to undertake study in a wide range of health related professions.
  Conditions No conditions on use of scholarship funds.  
  Value $5,000 per annum  
  Closing Date February each year (applications open in December each year; check site for specific dates)  
Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility Open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people studying Nursing, Medicine, Allied Health, Certificate III and IV or Diploma and Advanced Diploma Aboriginal Health Worker Course or Health Management at an educational institution/University/Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
  Conditions No conditions on use of funds  
  Value $15,000 per annum for the term of the course up to a maximum of $60,000 total for medicine.  
  Closing Date Approximately August each year.  
Australian Kidney Foundation Scholarships & Grants
Eligibility Open to any student
  Conditions To undertake a research project related to the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract over the summer vacation.  
  Value $1,200, paid upon successful completion of the project.  
  Closing Date August each year.  
Commonwealth Learning Scholarship
Eligibility Open to any student (must be from a low income background).
  Conditions Offered as Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS) and Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS).  
  Value In 2006 the CECS was worth $2,080 and the CAS was worth $4,161.  
  Closing Date Applications due date is set by the education provider.  
Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health (CAMDH) Scholarships
Eligibility Open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical and dental students at the University of Western Australia.
  Conditions For students who are suffering economic hardship.  
  Value Usually up to $2000  
  Closing Date Apply any time.  
Indigenous Peoples' Medical Scholarship Trust Fund 2008
Eligibility Applicants must be eligible for ABSTUDY. A scholarship will not be awarded to an applicant who already holds any other substantial scholarship. To be eligible, the applicant must be currently enrolled at an Australian Medical School and completing at least their first year of medicine.
