Australian medical colleges oversee the training and assessment of Australian specialists, the assessment of overseas trained specialists and ongoing professional development for Australian specialists. Medical colleges are also responsible for maintining the professional standards in their specialty area. Medical colleges also provide advice to government and industry groups, manage programs and support specialists in their specialty area.

Committee of Presidents of Medical Colleges
AIDA works closely with the Committee of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC). In 2008 the CPMC established an Indigenous Health Subcommittee, which is co-Chaired by the AIDA President and the President of the CPMC, Professor Geoffrey Metz AM. This Subcommittee focuses on programs that address the workforce shortage in Indigenous health, aims to provide clearer pathways for Indigenous medical graduates into specialisation and to develop programs to increase numbers of Indigenous medical specialists.
