Thinking of Studying Medicine?

Not sure if you can do it? Of course you can!

You just need to make sure you work hard at your studies in school.

  • At Primary School, it’s important to make sure you study English, Maths and Science as doctors use these skills everyday when doing examinations with patients;
  • Once you get to High School, you can start selecting subjects that will give you the most information, knowledge and skills needed to get into medical school at university;
  • All University medical schools will require you to have good grades at English but not many medical schools have other subjects that are called ‘pre-requisites’. These are subjects that you have to do in order to be allowed to do the course.

However, it is a good idea to study subjects like Maths, Chemistry, Biology and general sciences in order to give yourself the best chance. It’s a good idea to talk to someone about what subjects you should do and at the same time you can ask about extra help from within the University if you think you might need it.

A lot of medical schools are becoming ‘Graduate Entry Programs’ only, which means you need to have completed an university degree in just about anything before you can be eligible. Again, most medical schools don’t have pre-requisite courses and many people come from Teaching, Nursing, Science or just about any other degree and still do very well in Medical School!

Remember though – if you really want to study medicine there are many ways to get into the course! Contact AIDA for more information on alternate pathways into medicine.
