Community Events
The Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) regularly visits various communities around Australia each year such as:
- The Vibe Alive events
- Career Expos such as the former Origin Greats (FOGS) Indigenous Careers Expo
- Garma Festival
- Schools
- Aboriginal Medical Services
During the event, AIDA’s doctors and medical students talk to young people your age. There is a skeleton and anatomical model. The kids have lots of fun taking apart the model and putting it back together. This is a fun way to learn about the internal structure and function of the human body. At some events, AIDA even has a microscope for kids to have a look at. You can see all sorts of interesting things in this!
Merchandise such as calculators, pens, books and brochures on being a doctor are given to all who visit the AIDA stalls.
Read what other children from some of these community events had to say when asked if they wanted to become a doctor.
I would like to become a doctor:
- “To keep people healthy”
- “Cause it would be a great feeling to save someone’s life”
- “Because you get to help people, and people will look up to you and it’s fun”
- “Because you travel around Australia and meet new people”
- “I like to help people in the Torres Strait”
- “Because it seems interesting and I am really interested in medicine”
- “I would like to help my community and people find a better solution in life through choosing the right way and eating the right food”
- “A doctor has many qualifications”
