How do I get in? How do I get in?
Admission To An Undergraduate-Entry Program

Undergraduate Entry means you haven’t yet obtained your first bachelor degree. Generally this is the course you can enter straight from high school or, later as a mature age entrant without any other degree or qualification. For example, check out the ANU’s mature age entry options here.

Undergraduate entry medical programs in Australia range from five and half years to six years full time. Entry is based on year 12 performance (e.g. UAI, TER, TEE, VCE, NTCE), performance in the UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test) and an interview.

Admission To A Graduate-Entry Program

To enter a graduate entry course (postgraduate course) you have to have a previous bachelor degree. Most universities do not have a preference of discipline for the previous degree. They will also take into consideration your academic record (transcript).

The graduate entry course is typically four or four and a half years and admissions are based on three criteria. These are:
  • Bachelor degree
  • GAMSAT score
  • Interview
Universities may differ in their weighting of performance in each of the criteria.

The admissions process can be quite lengthy so you will need to plan well ahead. It will take about a year from the time you register for the Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test (GAMSAT) to when you commence studying at a university. The GAMSAT is held only once a year. It is usually held in late March or early April and you need to register with the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) by mid February. Visit http://www.acer.edu.au/index.html or http://www.gamsat.edu.au/ for more information.

Note: Students commencing a degree program at any Australian or New Zealand medical school are expected to complete the program at their chosen university. Any student who is currently enrolled or has previously been enrolled in an Australian or New Zealand medical degree program is not eligible to be considered for admission to the graduate-entry programs for a period of two years after the year of last enrolment in that degree program.

Applicants who completed their Bachelor degree more than ten years previously, and who do not have evidence of further formal academic qualifications, are advised to check their eligibility with their preferred medical school before registering for GAMSAT.

No preference is given to graduates with particular Bachelor degrees. The aim is to encourage individuals from diverse educational backgrounds who will bring to the profession a variety of talents and interests. No specific courses or subjects are prescribed.
