2009 AIDA Annual General Meeting

Sixty two (62) AIDA members gathered together on Friday 2nd October, 2009 at the Bardon Centre, Brisbane, to participate in this year’s Annual General Meeting.

Aunty Valda Coolwell, President of the Brisbane Council of Elders gave a powerful acknowledgement of Country. Associate Professor Peter O’Mara opened the meeting and acknowledged the Yuggera Peoples and their Country. Members were warmly welcomed to the meeting and their ongoing support and commitment was acknowledged. Professor O’Mara paid special tribute to the AIDA Board for their leadership and dedication toward achieving the goals and objectives of the AIDA organisation and for their friendship over the years. A special thankyou was extended to Dr Tamara Mackean, Dr Shannon Springer, Dr Marilyn Clarke, Dr Jason King and Ms Danielle Arabena who were stepping down from the AIDA Board at this AGM. Mr Romlie Mokak, AIDA’s Chief Executive Officer was also acknowledged for his exceptional management and leadership attributes, along with his staff for their ongoing hard work.

The 2008 AGM Minutes and Returning Officer’s report were endorsed by the membership. Board members and the CEO provided detailed reports outlining key events and representation responsibilities undertaken during the 2008/09 year including AIDA’s ongoing commitment to over 35 national committees, membership activities, governance, advocacy, policy, education, training and priorities for 2010 were shared with members. The audited financial statements were tabled and accepted and Hardwicke’s Chartered Accountants were appointed as AIDA’s auditor for the 2009/10 financial year.

A formal election process was carried out with Mrs Kerri Dickman acting as the Independent Returning Officer. Following the election process, AIDA’s new Board of Directors was announced as follows:

President O’Mara then presented AIDA scarfs and ties to current and past Board Members, past Presidents, CEO’s and Patrons. University Representatives for the 2008/09 period were also acknowledged by outgoing Director (Student) Ms Danielle Arabena.

Afterwards, members gathered on grasslands by a stream in Mount Coot-tha National Park to enjoy a wholesome meal of assorted marinated meats and vegetables prepared by Kapmauri Delights who are traditional Islander caterers. The gathering spot was surrounded by flame torches and dense bushland which created a beautiful setting for talking circles and yarning.
